Oregon Senator Helps NBTA On Unused Airline Ticket Tax Issue

Our Members are on the move...check it out on our Press Room page under Contacts.

National Business Travel Association

OBTA is an affiliation of the National Business Travel Association (NBTA), whose members represent major corporations and travel suppliers throughout the United States. Along with OBTA, the national organization provides members with information on the latest technical and service advantages within the industry, as well as current legislative issues involving travel costs and safety matters affecting business travel.

Oregon Senator Helps NBTA On Unused Airline Ticket Tax Issue

At the interest of NBTA members and the corporate travel community, NBTA last year began collecting data on unused, non-refundable ticket taxes. To determine how much money is lost in non-refunded taxes and what becomes of that money, NBTA worked closely with Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) to request an official study.
Senator Smith has requested via letter that the United States Government Accounting Office (GAO) review and report on the auditing and oversight mechanisms related to federal taxes and fees paid as part of the purchase of commercial airline tickets that are not utilized by the purchaser. GAO is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. Often called the "congressional watchdog," GAO investigates how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars.
The fees and taxes currently levied on commercial passenger tickets include:
1. Domestic Passenger Ticket Tax
2. Domestic Flight Segment Tax
3. Passenger Ticket Tax for Rural Airports
4. International Arrival and Departure Tax
5. Flights between U.S. and Alaska and Hawaii
6. Passenger Civil Aviation Security Fee or “September 11 Security Fee”
7. APHIS Passenger Fee
8. Customs Air Passenger Inspection Fee or “CBP User Fee”
9. Immigration User Fee
10. Frequent Flyer Tax
